Kormenga aka Kore Destroyer Takes down the Gr3mlin!

Naija Online Speedchess Championshp 2017

Quarter-Finals

Kormenga aka Kore Destroyer

Last night we saw another cracking match in the Naija online Speedchess Championship organised by the Odunaiya brothers who live in the UK. This was a Quarter Final match between Kormenga [aka Kore Dragonslayer ] and Alvin Forteta [aka Gr3mlin]. A lot of fireworks were expected, and it didn’t really disappoint. I have not really had time to watch any of Alvin’s games prior to this championship, neither did I get to see his game against JDCRUX – who is one of top players with a rating of 2000+ – in the first round.

I was surprised at his win, as I had penned down JDCRUX as a sure winner for that match. The fact that Alvin has not really been a regular participant in our daily group tourneys, was the main reason why it seemed that Kormenga entered this match with a lot for us rooting for him, as we knew his ability and tactical strength – ask Talldove (Dr Vic) who was Kormenga’s last opponent in the 1st Round.

The match was schedule to start @ 8pm GMT/9pm NGT, but due to Alvin’s failure to set his alarm after taking a quick nap, it meant the match was delayed for 1 hour. Fans were getting frustrate as once again we had given up our precious time with families to watch this event.

The first game was a draw, and then kormenga won the next 2 games in the 5+3 format, giving him a 2.5 – 0.5 lead, giving a feeling that he might runaway with easily with the match wrapped up early. But Gr3mlin had other ideas and started to fight back. Kormenga won the 5+2 format 3.5-2.5.

This is one their hotly contested games which ended as a win in favour of Kormenga
